How to make gold in World of Warcraft
It’s no “big secret.” It’s not even hard. Anyone can do it. And it’s guaranteed to work.
If you’re brand new to World of Warcraft, or even if you’re just starting on a new server and want to have some gold to be able to buy mounts and skills as you level up, hey, even buy that wonderful item you’ve heard about for so long but is always too expensive. Here’s the simplest and oldest trick to “gold farming” there is, and it’s worked since WoW was released.
- At level 5, goto the “Profession Trainer” which is one of the first people you see in the first town just outside the starter area.
- Right click on him or her, and “ask about gathering professions”
- then “ask about Mining” and “Learn mining.”
- Then, Ask about Gathering“, Skinning” and “Learn Skinning”
- Then goto the vendor right next to the trainer
- Buy a Mining Pick and a Skinning Knife.
There. You’ve just made your first step onto the road of making gold on a new server.
Now… just pick up all the quests you can, and go do them. Watch the gold spot/ blinky in the minimap signifying nearby ores, and mine all of them. And skin all the animals you kill.
Now you’ve completed all the quests, go back to the town. I personally sell “Leather scraps” to the vendor, as it’ll just take too much time and effort for a leatherworker to stitch them together to make a Light Leather. Go to the Inn, and logout.
Create a new toon.
If you’re Horde, create a Blood Elf of any class. Doesn’t matter. For Alliance, create a Human. Again, any class. EXCEPT Death Knight, because the idea is that you’ll just park this toon in either Silvermoon or Stormwind anyways, and you can’t do that with a Death Knight untill you’ve completed all the starterquests for them.
Log into this newly created character, and simply run to either Silvermoon City (Blood Elf aka Belf and Horde) or Stormwind (Human and Alliance) and check the auction house for the prices of beginner’s herbs, ore and leather.

Indulge me briefly, please. A few minutes ago, my main got herself a Golden King mount and a Dark Phoenix mount. We hit level 25 guild with a 25 man heroic conclave of winds kill and I was able to buy a fitting King for the ‘queen’. Quite fitting that my ‘queen’ was able to buy her king.

Satchel of Exotic Mysteries is coming in Patch 4.1
Blizzard announced that Patch 4.1 will include a “Call to Arms” to encourage tanks and healers to join pug heroics dungeons. If you’re not a tank you can wait for 30 minutes for a heroic in the “looking for party” dungeon finder, which is a pain in the backside if your guild tanks are all busy, and the pug tanks all disenchanted their braincells at level 20. (Source http://us.battle.net/wow/en/blog/2568337 ) Adding a satchel to the dungeon rewards is meant to encourage healers and tanks to join the call to arms in the dungeon finder.
My main is a feral druid, I queue 80% of the time as dps kitty. The 20% of the time I queue as a bear/tank is either due to misplaced hope or insobrietry. Big Bear Butt writes: “Is that the best they could come up with for a bribe? … I, personally, love tanking above all other group roles available in the game, and yet, I do not queue for randoms as a tank. Why? Because of the attitudes I encounter when I’ve tried. The behavior. The abuse.” I agree with him. Blizzard gave people dual spec which enabled some classes to keep a healer or tank spec in their second slot. That didn’t work at persuading us to tank, either.
Putting aside my concerns as a potential tank for a moment, let’s look at the bribe of “Satchel of Exotic Mysteries” which Blizzard offer. Maybe this will cheer me up as a gold-maker, instead?
Possible items included in Satchel of Exotic Mysteries
1. “some gold” Ok, I like gold, but how much is “some gold”, is it worth me tearing my hair out?
2. “a chance at a rare gem” Only a chance? Only a rare gem? That’s not worth much. You’d have to be desperate.
3. “a chance at a flask/potion” Again: Only a chance? You’d have to be desperate.
4. “a good chance of receiving a non-combat pet (including cross faction pets)” This is BAD news for gold-makers who sell these limited supply pets to collectors. It’s also useless for pet collectors, who generally already have these. Fail.
5. “a very rare chance at receiving a mount (those specifically only available through dungeons , like the Reins of the Raven Lord from Sethekk Halls, Swift White Hawkstrider from Magister’s Terrace, and Deathcharger’s Reins from Stratholme.” A very rare chance? Big whoop. I’d prefer a very rare chance at getting these mounts by soloing the instances, without having to put up over-agroing dps, and healers who refuse to use their mana. these are not sellable or tradable, it doesn’t affect us as a gold-maker. Fail.
All in all, what a waste of time. Thanks a bunch, Blizz.

Adding Value with the Obsidium Shuffle
The Obsidium Shuffle has always been about taking an item and adding value to it.

“How much gold are you worth?”
Item + u = better item.
In the obsidium shuffle, we take obsidium, add “u” in the form of prospecting and get a gem.
Then we have the opportunity to add another ‘u’ of crafting that gem into a ring or neck.
Again, we take the item and add “u” of disenchanting. And again add “u” of making enchanting scrolls, which are then put on the AH.
TLDR: Along the path of Obsidium Shuffle, we add value. We add our worth.
Ore +u+ Gem +u+ ring/neck +u+ Dust/Essense +u+ Enchanting Scroll
Factor in, however, our time. “U per hour” if you will. Profit per hour. Gold per hour. Gold per minute, whichever time period you want to use.
The addon Ore Crusher, which is a simplified version of the Consortium’s complicated spreadsheet on the subject, calculates that profit, along each step of the path. At each +u, Ore Crusher asks “is this worth my time?” “Could I make more gold doing something else with my time?”
Ore Crusher calculates profit, gold per hour, U/hr.

At times, your U/hr can be more profitable for you to cut and vendor the gems. Where the vendor costs of 9g per gem, gives you better profit than taking all your time to move the item along the production line from gem to item to dust to scroll. With the vendor price of a gem at 9g each, and it taking 2.0s to prospect and 3.0s to cut from raw, your U/hr is high. When you have a very busy server, and plentiful ore, your U/hr from ore to cut gem can be the most profitable along the whole production line.
Now the 9g per cut gem under threat, the whole production line has had its foundations shaken, and we need to think again about everything, back to basics.
