First in the series of gold blog reviews.

I want to support my gold-blogging community by reviewing the best of the World of Warcraft gold blogs, and hopefully throwing some more traffic their way.  If you’ve been looking for more free resources for learning how to make gold in World of Warcraft, this is the perfect place to start.

Power Word: Quality

Basics

Power Word: Gold is run by Fluxdada. He describes his blog as “Celebrating the Art of Gold Making in World of Warcraft.”

It’s hard to believe that PW:G, as we affectionately call it, only started on February 7th this year. The reason I’m including it in my list of blog reviews, as the first even, is that Fluxdada specialises in quality content, rather than quantity.  He’s not shy to post about a subject if other blogs have already covered it, but only if he has a good point that other blogs have missed, or an interesting idea that are actually of importance to gold makers.

Microfinances x multitude > few expensive sales.
Profiting in a long tail economy depends on your shelf space, your “factory floor” available, and your ability to implement just in time principles.

Pareto’s 80/20 rule says that 20% of a population holds 80% of its wealth. In the last article I touched on how it was a natural rule of human nature. I spend 80% of my shoe-buying fund on ridiculously cute shoes that I will never wear. I wear battered old trainers most of the time, instead.

The 80/20 rule is also known on the internet as the 80/19/1 law. For example, on a bulletin board, 80% don’t use it, 19% read it, and 1% dominate the posts on it.

Unfair? Very. Natural? Very.

I’m going to venture a guess that given a large enough cross section of WoW accounts, 80% will be casual, 19% raiders and 1% hardcore raiders. I’m also going to venture that Blizz, by catering more and more for the casual players are alienating and losing their top 20% and this is backed up by the shocking statistics showing the straight decline of WoW-related searches recorded by Google since 2006. The release of Cataclysm barely amounting to a month-long blip.
To partake in the top wealth, you need to be the top seller. The second best gets much less than the 1st, and after a certain small percentage, your wealth, your profits, descend to peanuts quickly.
Peanuts aka microfinances.

On a smaller server, with lower competition, it’s easier to be the top cat, which was my situation on my RP server before I started concentrating on the larger PVE server. With a larger population, you need to fight. If you want to capture your market, you are going to need add-ons that you can use to develop just in time methods and minimise your overheads and expenses.

Let’s take a diverse amazon-style sample: With 1 item @ 5k, 2 @100g, + 800 @10g, you’re going to make 5k + 200g + 8k. That’s if your 5k item sells. Mr Big is going to undercut your 5k sale, you can just feel it. It’s not so much of a tragedy if Mr Small undercuts 5 of your 10g sales.

Just in Time means that when 100 of your 10g items sell, your addon can pinpoint and notify you to immediately restock. You keep very few in your bank, and make and list them only when they are pulled by market forces. This is opposed to you pushing 10 of every item on a regular basis, regardless of sales volume, requiring you to adjust prices depending on availability.

Some Long Tail items to research:

  • prairie dog
  • wool cloth
  • purple lotus
  • mithril ore
  • aquamarine
Just in Time is a japanese business model but built on the most ancient of principles: discover your customers need, and fulfill it. Finding those gaps in the market is your greatest challenge, and the reason that all these gold guides and free blogs exist: to help you spot those small gaps. You have to be smart, adaptable and persistent if you want to cover the long profitable tail of the WoW market. You need all the technology (addons) and advice you can get.

This is a follow up to Levering the World of Warcraft Long Tail Economy with Addons.

Next in this series: Finding these resourses

TL;DR You can’t be top dog, I’m already top dog. You’re going to have to be clever and diversify instead.

A World of Warcraft virtual economy article

An unusual situation is taking shape slowly and surely in World of Warcraft as the market matures, players gain more knowledge, more experience of the AH, of addons, and of items.  The market becomes more saturated with items for sale, and the limiting factor in the number of items you can sell becomes more and more dependent on time, rather than gold.  See my post Time is Money Friend.  WoW is a maturing market, we know prices, we can guess the big selling items.

Pareto Principle

The Pareto Principle, also known as the 80/20 rule, used in the context of World of Warcraft says that:

The top 20% of the items will generate 80% of your sales.

According to Chris Anderson of Wired, this 80/20 rules is the natural shape of our culture, of humanity, and of our economics.

wired

Anderson extrapolated this 80/20 rule, and tied it in with the Just In Time methods which Amazon famously use to source and provide their products, and allow them to focus not just on the big sellers like World of Warcraft: Cataclysm but on the niche products, the almost-out-of-print books, the music, and other products which comparatively less buyers want to buy, but for which there is still a market.  Rare items, slow selling items, but still items that buyers want to own.  He called this the Long Tail.

longtail

Long tail selling is niche marketing in its purest form, and we can apply it back to World of Warcraft:

80% of items that sell are the big sellers such as volatile life, elementium ore, embersilk cloth.

But you can still make gold selling rarer and slower selling products such as wool cloth, patterns and recipes for vanilla content, I’m sure you can think of other slower selling, less sought after items for the Auction House.

“What’s really amazing about the Long Tail is the sheer size of it. Combine enough [rarer items] on the Long Tail and you’ve got a market bigger than the hits. ” Chris Anderson

Venture capitalist and former music industry consultant Kevin Laws puts it this way: “The biggest money is in the smallest sales.”

What made Amazon able to capitalize on Long Tail markets was the reduction in the cost of distribution usingjust-in-timeinventory management systems, cheap factory storage and an online store inventory of virtually the entire marketplace of products

World of Warcraft Factories?

We don’t have cheap factory storage in WoW, but we do now have guild banks, and the amount of items we can store by mailing them back and forth to alts is only limited by our time spent mailing.  We don’t have Just In Time Point of Sale electronics, but we do have addons such as Trade Skill Master that can semi-automate the process.

My scribe, for example, can ensure that he always has a stock of 4 of every profitable glyph up on the Auction House.

And whilst he still sells several expensive 100g+ glyphs, and tries to avoid having to craft the less profitable 0-30g glyphs, it’s the low end to mid range glyphs that sell fastest, and sell best, and taken together, this Long Tail is a balance with the ‘Head’ of the economy, the more in demand glyphs.

Let me sum that up:

You need both ends of the economy.

The more observant and regular readers will notice I’ve been a little quiet this week.  This is because I’ve been working hard behind the scenes to move from Blogger to a self-hosted blog running on WordPress, and I’ve been wrestling with some bad-tempered PHP scripts and CSS files.  We’ll be moving hosts on 29th March, don’t update your bookmarks just yet!

Don’t worry I haven’t forgotten you, here is a sample of some ideas I am brewing for up for publication:

  • Levering the microeconomy with add-ons
  • Preparing for Children’s Week
  • Specialise, or Diversify?  JMTC Carnival
  • and a review of one of the highest quality gold blogs I’ve ever seen!

Massive Gold Blueprint Review

aka Warcraft Gold Blueprint
made by Jonathan Kenins

This full review is for Massive Gold Blueprint, which is the first World of Warcraft gold guide that I bought. I have bought MGP and use it myself.

I had been making gold for a couple of years already, using my personal methods, and had started to realise that I was doing really well with the auction house and really enjoying it. I was browsing online for patch information and looking for any ideas that I could use to get even richer, or to make my life easier in the Auction House.

I came across a link to a free webinar video (that’s an internet seminar) which had a whole list of items to buy now for resale after Cataclysm, but it also explained some of the economic ideas behind why you should be buying them now, and that was really useful because I could then apply those principles to other items I could buy.

I decided to invest in the guide to make my gold gathering even better, and I also wanted to compare my methods with the Massive Gold Blueprint methods.

What do you get?

As soon as you purchase Massive Gold Blueprint, you get a short email with your membership details. This gives you access to the members area.

Members area

The private members area is large, with categorised lessons which are available as movies with in-game footage, and in other formats. They begin with setting up an army of alts. This is an optimal set up of alts, stationed at strategic locations, that become the backbone of the tested and re-tested system of profit pipelines.

Another section deals with how to set up all your addons, including lots of tricks like scanning for under-priced items, buying items fast, and using the advanced search. I definitely learned a few of new tips for automating my gold process here!

Movies

The movies are arranged into sections, and you can easily move from one section to another. The Massive Gold Blueprint method is really different from other ideas that I’ve heard about making gold, so you will need to watch some of them over again, sometimes pause them to tab back into world of warcraft and make some revisions to your add-ons or to search for stuff in the auction house or from vendors.

The movies can be downloaded, and so can the accompanying PDFs and MP3s. Apparently this was the first ever guide in movie format, so the guy who makes it is obviously experienced with making the movies. He churns them out every few weeks or so, whenever something new or interesting happens in WoW that directly affects gold making opportunities.

There is an enormous wealth of economic strategies, best practices, worst mistakes to avoid, and AH set-ups. Learn about different niche markets, especially the volatile market for trade goods. Also included is information on how to use cross-faction arbitrage, buying something cheaply, and transferring it through the neutral auction house to sell for a better price to the opposing faction.

I particularly enjoyed the in-game footage shot of collecting limited supply and rare items from vendors in the cities, my favourite being Booty Bay, which has so much opportunity that I sometimes find and run the movie again just so I don’t miss any – lots are hidden in nooks and crannies in the town.

The seasonal events guide offers ideas for making gold during Darkmoon Faire, Winter Veil, and Jonathan Kenins often releases news updates with WoW patches and members-only events.

What’s so different about it?

You get access to a members only forum, which is stuffed full of feedback from members, and their tips on how they have used the Blueprint method to get their gold.

The promise of Massive Gold Blueprint, which is backed up by a no-questions asked guarantee, is that you can generate massive amounts of gold in the shortest possible time. It really focuses on cutting down the amount of time you have to spend on making gold, so you get to enjoy the rest of the game, and spending that gold!

The famous Gold Speed Runs

You also get to join the famous Gold Speed Runs, which are similar to power leveling competitions, racing to level 85, except for making gold. Challenging the other members, with live feedback over the members-only teamspeak gives you an absolutely unique insight into the different way that the Blueprint can be used. With real-time feedback from real players, the crazy-rich elite of WoW, this must be the most powerful way of learning and improving your strategies.

Forums

Socialising with the other rich MGP members are one reason that to keep coming back to MGP, reading the forums, and chatting on Team Speak. One member, an experienced programmer and spreadsheet fanatic has created an Auction House add on, only for MGP members which we are beta testing during 2011. It’s not an official part of MGP, but just one of the perks you get from joining the group of elite rich members. I’d better not tell you any more about it, it’s super secret!

Who is it for?

Massive Gold Blueprint is aimed at level ones who are just starting in making gold in world of warcraft. The basic principles can be followed by anyone, no need for professions, mounts, or even a working knowledge of WoW because the movies guide you around by the hand. That said, I think that the players who will get the most out of this are players who already have a few gold in their bank, and understand the basics of gold making, because the methods he teaches are so unique, they can be patched onto your current gold making methods and strategies, and compliment what you already do.

Good and Bad Points

Occasionally I found the lessons a little too detailed and simplistic, which was annoying because I had to fast forward. I left them running whilst I played Warcraft in another window, and tabbed back as soon as I heard something interesting. Good job his voice is pleasant to listen to, I know some of the free gold guides out on YouTube grate right on my nerves with their arrogant sales pitches.

At other times, there was so much packed into one movie I had to watch it several times to understand what he was trying to explain, especially with learning how to use his own very special system for AH researching and deciding which items to buy and resell.

I also found the layout of the categories slightly stilted. MGP was first written and recorded in 2008/2009, and it does feel a little like an old house that has had several extensions built, each adding more value to the original old house, but changing its style and creating a higgle-dee-piggle first impression. With a new reorganisation, the masses of information and lessons could be much easier and faster to access. That said, I was still impressed by the content of the movies, and the masses of detailed ingame footage and explanatory presentation that accompanied them.

Jonathan is not infallible. He recently did a members-only video to suggest we buy a particular new pattern, as it might sell for huge profits. I thought I was so lucky to snag them for 10g each, until I realised that there were so many of them, that it would be impossible to sell them for more than 50g each, so I only really gained a few gold. I was glad to be able to talk to the other members in the MGP forum and teamspeak as we were discovering together the new items and possibilities in Cataclysm.

Cataclysm

Even though MGP was first released back in 2009, Jonathan Kenins has continually updated the guide, and now includes an entirely new section for World of Warcraft Cataclysm, There is the Bust-and-Boom plan, Crafting Crush Plan, and the Gold Rush plan. They suit different types of players, I personally went for the Bust and Boom plan, and I’m now selling some trade goods at over 400% the price I paid for each piece, thanks to careful planning, and a pre-cataclysm heads-up from Jonathan.

chest-headerResources

The extra resources section has some free bonuses, direct add-on links, PDFs and cheat sheets you can print and refer to whilst playing.

Conclusion

Massive Gold Blueprint is an absolutely stunning method of creating thousands and thousands ofgold in a relatively short time frame. Membership is stuffed to bursting with tips, strategies, economic understanding, and detailed information on using add-ons and current events to your advantage in World of Warcraft. It’s like a secret treasure trove: browsing through, each item reveals an even better treasure. It’s bursting at the seems, constantly growing, supported and updated by Jonathan Kenins. Membership of MGP will teach you to become one of the super rich in WoW with little effort, using methods that work on any server, for any level of player. Results are backed with a no questions guarantee.

If you want access to the over-flowing wealth of information, it is worth investing in Massive GoldBlueprint membership.
