About five minutes ago on my main’s server, I heard some poor guy, lets call him Panda, in trade yelling “LF loan!” and “LF ways to earn 700g in an hour!” I will spare your delicate ears the suggestions he received over trade chat *smirk*
Anyway, feeing in a generous mood, I whispered him, asking his professions. He said mining, and I suggested he sell some ore, but it appears he only had mid level mining. He didn’t fancy running over to Sunwell Isle to look for some Khorium.
So we took a different tactic, I suggested he read the Moongraze Tenderloin idea suggested by Lindsey in his guest post. He seemed a little less frantic when he realised that I was actually offering him real tips and ideas, and started to trust me. He asked me how much a particular shield would sell for, and I checked it in my auctioneer database and gave him the details. He then opened up completely and I realised that he wanted the 700g quickly in order to buy this shield, he wasn’t asking me to buy it so he could have gold.
I asked him if he’d considered buying the mats and getting the shield made, and he was astonished. He thought that the shield was a Bastion of Twilight drop. I assured him it was a Blacksmith made item, and suggested he go look it up on Wowhead.
Checking with a guild mate, it appears the cost of the mats for the shield was over 1,000g less than the selling price. So he no longer needed to earn 700g, and could actually get the shield and still have gold left in his pocket. A couple of minutes later, Panda had his shield equipped, and I made a new mate.
Lessons to be learned, hm?

Dear Gold Queen …
From: A
Subject: green inks
Message Body:
I just read your post about making gold from glyphs, one of my 2 main toons is a scribe so I’ve jumped on this lol. I was just wondering what do you do with the “uncommon” quality pigments that drop occaisionally from milling? Thanks =)
Hi A, thanks for dropping me a line. How are you doing with making glyphs? I think they’re great, I make a killing on glyphs every day!
“Green” or uncommon inks have always worried me too, I’ve never been 100% sure what to do with them. The inks are:
- Hunter’s Ink
- Dawnstar Ink
- Royal Ink
- Firey Ink
- Ink of the Sky
- Darkflame Ink
- Snowfall Ink
- Inferno Ink
Inferno Ink, naturally, is currently a high worth ink. Darkmoon Card of Destruction takes 10 Inferno Ink, 30 Volatile Life, 1 Resilient Parchment. When you craft a Darkmoon Card of Destruction you have a chance of making any of the ‘Cataclysm Darkmoon Faire Cards’. You can read more about these under my Darkmoon Faire guide.
The other inks are more tricky. You have the choice of:
- Vendor the Ink
- Auction the Ink
- Use the Ink to craft a Darkmoon Faire card
Our problems here are: Will the ink sell at auction house? Is it worth auctioning? You can find this out by doing a trial auction, or by checking AH over several days and watching the movements of the ink.
What card will I get? Will it sell?
I’m afraid the card is random, you could get any of the following cards:
- Hunters Ink – Rogues Deck
- Dawnstar Ink – Swords Deck
- Royal Ink – Mages Deck
- Firey Ink – Demons Deck
- Ink of the Sky – Random Darkmoon Card – one of the vanilla / original World of Warcraft Darkmoon Faire cards.
- Darkflame Ink + 3 Primal life = Greater Darkmoon Card – one of the ‘Burning Crusade’ Darkmoon Faire cards.
- Snowfall Ink + Eternal Life = Darkmoon Card of the North – one of the ‘wrath of the lich king’ Darkmoon Faire cards.
Compare the auction prices of the ink against the rough average price of a card from the deck it makes, and then decide whether to craft the card or not, depending on your time availability and whether you can generally be bothered or have better things to do!
If you decide to make the cards, you then have to decide whether to
- Sell the cards singly?
- Save and make them into a deck?
Its a simple case of maths – add up the cost of the cards as singles, and compare it to the cost of a deck. Which will sell for most gold? Don’t forget to check whether or not there is a market for the item. Will it actually sell? Do players on your server want single cards, or decks?
There is another factor in this equation which is time of the month: is it Darkmoon Faire time? Â Card prices are cyclical. They increase during a Darkmoon Faire, and drop during the other days. Â So, are you wanting a profit now, or a larger profit later?
I’m going to end this study with a quick run down of what I am personally doing on my own server. Remember, there is no point copying what I do, unless you’re on my server. In which case I’ll pwn you in the AH anyway. I’m mean like that 😉
If I have a lot of time to spare, I’ll make the inks into cards.
If I have recently seen someone buying decks from AH, or yelling in trade that they want the Insane achievement, I will contact them and offer them the decks direct.
Otherwise, I’ll auction the inks off and let someone else deal with them. Let them make the gold from the card and deck making, because I like to concentrate on glyphs.
I hope this helped, and please let come back to me and let me know how it goes for you on your server

One of the interesting things about writing for a gold blog is the emails I’m starting to get from WoW players all over the world that I would never have normally connected with.
A few of them are just quick “hello, thanks for the newsletter, just wanted to say hey!” but I always ask people to email me if they have any questions and I’ve had a few doozies in the past week. There’s a guy who wants to make gold but thought my idea of using his professions was too time consuming. In case he’s still staring at my replies and wondering whether he can make gold like this, I’m going to wave the How to Make Gold With Glyphs guide at him and try and attract his attention (HELLO! YES YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE!) to reading about automating the process with Trade Skill Master, which is one of the addons I recommend in my TGQ’s must-have addons.
I’m sorry but gold is just not going to drop from the sky and hit you on the head, I know some guides make you think you can just lounge around in Stormwind or Undercity and Greatfather Winter will just sneak a few k into your mailbox, I’m afraid you do actually have to sell things from time to time. Now don’t fret, pet, I’m here to back you up all the way.
Anyway, my point is: I’ve been offering my email readers the opportunity to ask me questions and get me to solve their problems. Now I want to throw it open to everyone. Say you have a problem like the guy who mailed me, wanting to get into gem making and didn’t know which gems to start with. He dropped me an email, and now he’s making some nice G . That sort of thing I can help with straight up. And here’s the best bit: I probably won’t know the answer to half of the questions, but I bet some of the other readers here can help! So we can find your answer either way.
Now all you have to do is message me on the contact page and one way or another, I’ll help you out. Ok with you?

Making Gold by Raiding in World of Warcraft
There are two ways of getting gold through providing the ‘service’ of a raid to other players. One is by selling a place in a guild run for achievements, and this is something that’s been around in game for several years. The first really big notice was when guilds started selling speed runs through Zul Aman to get the Zul Aman warbear mount for 10,000g or so. More recently, players have been able to buy places for achievements in Icecrown Citadel.
Introducing GDKP
This post is about the other way to make gold through raiding, which is a “GDKP” run. Yes, that means “Gold DKP” and it means that you join a hand-picked pug, and spend gold instead of DKP. The GDKP you pay for an item drop is put into a raiders pot, and if you have behaved yourself and played well, you get a share of the pot at the end of the run. There are usually strict rules that you will be required to stick to if you want to get your share of the pot at the end!
Basics
- Items that drop are auctioned off in raid chat
- All raiders are equal, there are no mains/alts priorities.
- The item goes to whichever raider bids the most gold.
- The highest bidder receives the item and pay the amount of gold into the “pot”.
- At the end of the run, the pot is shared equally between all the raiders.
Pros
- Tend to get a high quality of raiders who are looking to make gold, or very rich alts/new raiders who want to get an item they can’t get in another way, or a combination of both.
- Pot is split at the end of the raid, so its an incentive for all the puggers to stay in the raid.
- Because they are well organised, with a good leader, and good players, GDKP runs are more successful than random pugs.
- GDKP runs attract high geared players who want gold, and can provide a good quality raid.
- If you’re a competent raider, and don’t need much/anything from the raid, you can get very rich very quick.
Cons
- You need a very firm raid leader. If a raider is slacking, not flasking properly, going AFK without reason, your leader is going to have to kick him, and the slacker is not going to be pleased about losing his gold!
- Raid leader must be very precise and upfront with all the rules. For this reason, its best to organise them via forums where raiders can ‘sign’ that they agree to the rules. Rules MUST be stated before the raid starts, and repeated in raid chat beforehand, so everyone is clear.
- Some raiders worry the pot will be ninjad.
- Elitist Jerks says: “If the pot is ninjaed, Blizzard GM’s actually will intervene and split them to the raid, if there was a written agreement at the start of the run. This is why I’m highly recommending all Raid Leaders paste the rules at the start, and Raid Members refuse to go on any run where this isn’t done.”
- You need to read the boss and raid strategy beforehand, and be prepared to focus and play in a courteous and non-selfish way. You will have the threat of being kicked hanging over your head!
Useful to know
- Some items can start a high bidding war, which is great for other players, but not so great if that is the item you want.
- Be wary of any GDKP that have non-public votes. What’s the leader trying to hide?
- Use common sense – is it being organised in a clear and fair manner, or is it a just a normal pug that some swindler is trying to abuse?
- Some servers have lots of GDKP runs, some have never heard of it.
- Players should bring a Minimum amount of gold, this will be set by the raid leader.
- Successful GDKP runs are those that are run by a strong leader, on a regular basis, organised well in advance somewhere like the realm forums, who has a good reputation.
- Its a good way to gear up alts. You could take your alt to a GDKP run, earn 10,000g, repeat a second week, earn another 10,000g and in the third week have enough to spend 20,000g on a beautiful epic.
How much can you make?
GDKP runs were very popular in Wrath of the Lich King. They’ve dropped off in Cataclysm because there aren’t as many full-geared players. Yet. Give it a few months, and wait until you see geared up raiders on your server with alts that want. Then the sky is the limit. ICC saw raiders walk off with thousands of gold for a few hours work doing something they love. It’s going to depend on what drops. If there is an item that raiders want to buy, and are willing to spend a lot of gold on, then you can profit from that.
If you’re thinking about running a GDKP run or joining your first GDKP it is worth your time to read up about how they work on forums like Elitist Jerks or your realm forums.
