Cataclysm

TGQ, the Cataclysm

You may or may not be aware that despite my shiny domain name and shiny new website design and free forums and email subscriptions and twitter microblog, that I’ve been properly blogging about gold for a little over a month.  My first few posts were absolute tripe when I read back on them, I can’t possibly count them as blogging.  Who the hell cares whether I made X amount of gold that week or if I underhandedly made myself another thousand? Jeez, what was I thinking?

In these few weeks, I’ve started now to learn the basics of what to post, how to post, what you want to read.  Not another bland review of buy low sell high, that’s for sure.

  • It is insanely easy to browse through the blog and choose a random tip (Sell arcanite bars!) or a random strategy (undercut by 50% to annoy your competitor!) and throw it at your auction house, and walk away with a few gold.
  • It’s insanely easy to take that tip the next day and find that it no longer works, and come back to my blog and look for another shiny, flashy tip.
  • You can get caught up in this pick and mix bullcrap for the rest of your World of Warcraft life, if that’s all you want.  If all you want is mediocre success, if all you want is a few gold.
  • Markco of Just My Two Copper agrees with me.

If you want to understand what you’re doing, if you want to make huge amounts of gold, you got to get off your backside and work.  Making real gold is not simple, and its not quick. I can not make you rich quick. I can’t teach you how to get rich quick.

I can teach you how to teach yourself to get rich at a good steady solid pace.

How’s that for honesty?

Here is my commitment to you:

I will still give you shiny, get-rich-quick tips, quick ideas that you can take away and ADD to your current strategy.  I’m going to help you learn the whole she-bang the whole truth about how to get really rich.  How to mess up, how to try again, how to lose gold, and how to put all these things together to make a proper solid gold making business.  That’s partly why I give away my ‘daily guide’ book with my email newsletters.  The daily guide book is an empty framework for you to take away, and fill with your own regular routines, your own strategies that work. Its a barebones shell that you can use on your server.

Meeting

Mastermind group. Can I be the bald man?

I have joined a Mastermind group with a very small group of other gold bloggers who have committed to meeting together regularly to review, critique and support each others plans and posts.  We want to increase our quality. We are dedicated to bringing you the best stuff that we can.

For your sake: I promise to yawn at their boring proposals but I promise to stand up and cheer and support them when they come up with a good idea.  With self-confidence as fragile as mine, I’m scared sh-tless what they might say to me.

Here’s what I need from you. It’s two things.

  • First off, fire me a comment to tell me that you approve. I’m human, and your support means the world to me.
  • Secondly, I want you to share this webpage.  Either click one of my sharing links and repost this on twitter, facebook, or stumbleupon.  Or just tell a single guild mate to come and read The Gold Queen.  Gimme some more readers, make me more accountable, and I’ll be doubly supported in this scary step I’m about to take.

Yes you read that right, how to make gold with builders working in my house. I’ve had the builders and plumbers in my house on Monday and Tuesday, and spent the weekend before this emptying cupboards, packing, throwing away and generally stressing. When you have brick dust in the air, and water all over your kitchen floor, and cats trying to get blocked into the chimney, and a hot water tank lying dead on your front lawn, then getting online to world of warcraft just to make a few g is not a priority.  My limited play time is driven down to the very minimum and I want to share with you what I’m doing over these two days.  Please spare a thought for me blogging away here at 6 degrees C in my lounge with a kindle in one hand, and a danish pastry from the supermarket in the other.  Alright, I confess, I put them both down in order to type.

So: with very limited time to get online, what are my plans:

  • Get online with my main and check her mail.
  • Repost what I can, using TSM super speed scrolly mouse posting.
  • Do my JC daily.

Anything else is a bonus.  I’ll let you know how I get on.  I’m going back to hiding on the sofa with my kindle, until I can reach the PC again without annoying some butch builder type trying to catch my eye and making the “make me a coffee, love” sign.

ps, yeah I know I said I’m taking a vacation, but wouldn’t you rather hear about me completely failing to make g instead?

Gold Queen will be going on ‘vacation’ for 4 days.  I’m having some work done in the house, which will be disruptive.  I’ll still be around but won’t be posting for 4 days. I’ll be back on Tuesday, more likely Wednesday, and it will be host and domain name moving time for us, so expect another couple of days disruption to service.

Play nice whilst I’m away, and enjoy the new forums.  I have Trade Skill Master guide slowly forcing its way to the front of my attention, so keep your eyes and ears open for news on that when I get back.

If you’re stuck for something to do whilst I’m away (I doubt it!) have a look at my Warcraft Resources page and check out what the other bloggers are doing this weekend.

Maturity

I’ve been playing World of Warcraft for over 5 years now, and I’ve seen a lot of changes. Bear with me whilst I tell you a short story:

When I started raiding, it was at the time of Molten Core/ Zul Gurub, and if anyone remembers Molten Core, it was sometimes known as Molten Bore. zzzz. At any one point in the raid, there would be maybe 5 people afk and on autofollow, out of 40.  Back in those days, the number of guides for anything was minimal. We had CT Raid Assist addon, and that was pretty much it.  As time has progressed, we got more guides.  Videos came out of boss fights, the gold guides were released, and tweaked and advertised and copied and spread and so on.

In World of Warcraft virtual economy where we used to have only auctioneer, we now have more addons than we know what to do with.  Quick Auctions came and went, Auctionator managed to stick around, Trade Skill Master is now the premium, useful but complicated addon that everyone wants to use.  I also see a lot of searches for Ore Crusher.

Here’s the problem I’m seeing:

We’re at the point where blogs like The Gold Queen are all free.  Where MMO Champion runs guides on gold making on its front page. Who remembers the guide they ran on the front page and the difficulties it brought to the top gold makers of the realm when suddenly another large number of casual players read the guide and wanted a piece of the action?   Prices fell through the floor, and everyone had to adapt.   I’m also thinking of a comment I received in response to the blog post I wrote in advance about Children’s Week.

“Prices soar once the bloggers give people a heads up.”

The WoW market has matured, come of age.  Everyone seems to know what they’re doing.  You might think you’re just a casual or newbie Auction House player, but if you know how to use the basic mechanics of auctioneer, then you’re already one step ahead of the way gold was made in the Auction House 5 years ago.

We saw this situation when Cataclysm was released.  Players knew the expansion was coming, and prepared for it, buying up items in preparation for the prices soaring. The items that were about to become useless got sold slowly but surely, or held on to in banks until the prices came back up.  So instead of sharp rises and falls, the movements were more stable in price than was predicted.  I know one guru who predicted huge dumps of cheap enchanting mats, for example, but the dumps I saw were small, and moderately priced.   It wasn’t the shocking rises and falls in prices that I saw when The Burning Crusade and then Wrath of the Lich King were released.

WoW has grown up, and the players’ understanding of the virtual economy has grown up too.

Maturity

Mature Market

If you’re trying to make some gold from Children’s Week, its no longer as easy as buying mageroyal the week before and baking a few cakes for the achievement hunters.  You’re going to have to think smart to stay ahead of the crowd.  Either follow my heads up and get your mageroyal really super early or you’re going to have to work on your ‘packaging’, bundling all the items together for buyers to pick up from you in one package.

With the Undermine Journal spewing out every statistic you could possibly want on the auctions, information is no longer a scarce commodity, either.

So then, this is our challenge: How are we going to cope with a maturing market where information is abundant?
