Why am I in (Outland) Nagrand at 05.10 in the morning?  I can answer the time question by way of a messed up body clock that us WoW players get from time to time.  However, as a gold blog writer who hates farming and often writes about how Opportunity Cost means that farming is a waste of time, why am I farming!?

The answer lies in an odd situation I discovered on my server auction house. Primal Air sells for over 100g each. I wanted a piece of that action!

Primal Air is used for crafting a lot of items but especially by enchanters who are currently making a small fortune selling retro enchants

  • Enchant Boots – Cat’s Swiftness
  • Enchant Cloak – Greater Agility
  • Enchant Cloak – Major Resistance
  • Enchant Gloves – Superior Agility
  • Enchant Weapon – Greater Agility

Back in The Burning Crusade expansion, primal farming was one of the ways to make quick profits.  The Elemental Plateau in Nagrand is home to a number of fast respawning elemental mobs which drop lots of lovely motes, including motes of Air.  10 motes make a Primal Air.  So each mote is worth to me around 10g each. Which is not a bad profit for a sleepless feral druid to make with a single swipe of her over-geared paw.

If you saw 10g lying on the ground, wouldn’t you want to pick it up, too?

Talking Points: Can farming ever be fun? Do you know any other things to farm that can make this sort of gold-per-hour?  Do you ever farm or grind for relaxation and a change of pace?

Where could Epic Gems come from in Patch 4.2?

I want to look at all the speculation surrounding the epic gems which are possibly coming in Patch 4.2. Here are ten different places that epic gems *might* come from.

1. Prospecting pyrite ore. This fits with the way we got epic gems in Wrath of the Lich King.

2. Prospecting a new ore.  Black Iron Ore was datamined and suggested as a possible epic gem source.

3. Daily Jewelcrafting of updated Fire Prism.

4. Daily Jewelcrafting of a new epic version of Fire Prism.

5. Transmuting Rare gems + herbs = epic gems. An epic version of the current transmutation of uncommon gems + herbs = rare gems.

1. Loot everything you kill.

2. Take gathering professions, and treat herbs, ore, and un-skinned beasts as gold lying on the ground waiting to be picked up.

3. Make yourself a level 1 bank alt, and send everything you don’t need to the bank alt.  Let the bank alt deal with selling, auctioning and storing.

4. Get the biggest bags you can afford, so you can loot as much as possible. Beg your guild if necessary!

5. Don’t spend in the Auction House unless you can’t avoid it.

6. Don’t buy gear.  Your armor and weapons will drop from your kills, or from quest rewards.  You do not need to be the best dressed level 12 Mage.

7. Don’t buy potions, elixirs or scrolls either.  They will drop, too.

8. Do not worry too much about learning the addons at the beginning. There is no rush.

9. Use your professions as soon and as often as you can.  Craft, craft, craft. Then sell.

Golden Tip:

10. Be nice to everyone, build a good reputation to make more sales later.

Sleeping Peon

Work Work.

Gold making can seem like work at the time, and I admit that it seems doubly so when you are not just making gold on the auction house but writing about it, implementing new designs about it, dealing with spam, replying to emails and messages about it, forums, and networking. Well it’s all Work Work, Zug Zug, and sometimes you just have to take a break!

That is my message for you today: Take a break.  When our brains are busy busy busy all the time, they do not have time to enter daydream state. Our peon has the right idea by taking a break from his work to let his body and mind relax and prepare for his work.

Listening to the Just My Two Copper teamspeak meeting broadcast, I was shocked by the number of gold experts who are spending hours and hours making gold online on World of Warcraft. One guru went so far as to say they did not remember the last time when they had left the capital city.

To be honest, I would hate that to happen to me.  I enjoy making gold in World of Warcraft.  But I’m horrified by the idea of it taking over my life.  Even thinking about this from a professional point of view, how can you expect to stay on top of the trends, upcoming changes, finding what players want to buy, finding which items are commonly being sold, how can you expect to understand players and your entire virtual economy if you aren’t even moving away from the Auction House.

My challenge to you for today is: move away from the auction house.  Give up making gold for a few hours.  Go and enjoy yourself.  Day dream.  Join in with some raids, some pugs, or pvp.  Re-connect with your buyers at the base level.  Even go and do some farming for once, try and remember what it was like to grind for mats.  You may have a little more consideration for your ‘farmers’ and players who are out gathering for you whilst you rake in the gold stood around in Stormwind or Orgrimmar.

Take a break.

Talking point: What percentage of your time do you give to making gold?  Would you like to spend more time or less time doing this?  When does the fun of the Auction House turn from a challenge into a second job? Or do you disagree and think there is no benefit to taking a break?

Last Darkmoon Faire, I noticed players who wanted to buy Darkmoon Faire cards in order to get the Insane achievement were buying every card under 10g in the AH.

Between Darkmoon Faire events, card prices slip, especially for cheap and cheerful cards that no-one really wants to buy.  I have taken a gamble and bought the cards that are currently selling for under 10g each.   You might want to investigate the same on your server.
