Gold Snobs

I’m pretty angry at the elitist attitudes that can grow up around gold making in World of Warcraft.  I’m not shocked, because everyone knows that normal person + internet = drooling idiot, and that “open” can become “open sewer”.

However, I am disappointed that a friend and fellow gold blogger, Flux of Power Word Gold felt intimidated by this “elitists” and that he had to use the words “my secret shame” in a post which should celebrate him reaching a gold making milestone.

I started writing this gold blog, and I’m sure Flux did the same, out of a desire to help players.  WoW is not a win-lose game, where some elitist jerk gets to rub his/her massive amount of gold in the face of a losing player.  There is enough gold to go around, and you do not need to have even 100,000g to be a real gold gamer.

This is one of the several reasons why I refuse to hit gold cap.  One million gold is not only the end-of-the-game and end of the fun for me, but it would also put me up there with the snobs who think they are better than other players because of some number in game.

It’s more than numbers

I can still crack out a seriously high dps, but I’m no longer highest dps on recount.  Back when I was a regular raider, I could put out stupidly high numbers, but I also prided myself on being the druid who would pop out of catform to res, innervate, or take over offtanking.  I was also the guy who would whisper those who looked like they were slacking, only to find out that they had a problem that we could sort out together and that would increase their input into the raid.  I used to say I was not a cog in the mechanism of the raid guild, I was the oil that helped the cogs work better together.

The point is, screw the numbers.

What Being Rich Really is

Being “Rich” in world of warcraft means that you have enough gold to buy what you need when you need it, without worrying where the bloody hell the gold will come from.

Being rich is knowing enough strategies, and having an instinctive feel for the ebb and flow of the market.

Being rich is an ability to make gold, not an ability to hoard coins.

Being rich is knowing you can rely on your competence.

Flux is rich. In fact, he was richer than those a-holes before he even hit 250k.

Introduction to Craft Ninja

Ever wanted to spy on the other WoW players around you, checking what they’re crafting, so that you can investigate those items and discover if they were profitable or useful for you?

I’ve just stumbled over a new addon, developed by Sapu with help from Aeg of The Consortium which does just that.

Craft Ninja

Updated this month, July, so it’s currently up to date. It’s a small, useful addon that displays the crafting messages of players around you.  Try using it in the Auction House, and understand what all the gem-crafting noises, and disenchanting twings actually mean.

You can also turn on ‘trade skills’ for the blizzard window which can also display which items players are crafting, however, CN’s strengths lie in its customisation ability, especially the GUI.

Commands

Craft Ninja

Click to see GUI. Names blurred to protect the innocent !

“Type ‘/cn’ to print out a list of slash commands. There is a basic GUI for showing a consolidated view of the crafts that have been tracked (‘/cn gui’). The data is just tracked on a per-session basis.”

Click to see the GUI.  Choosing a player’s name brings up a list of which items you have seen them craft.  This guy is obviously a leatherworker.

I want to give you a list of seven different items that you can make with your professions, that you can add to your AH checklist. They’re not on the normal Cataclysm crafting list because they’re from previous expansions of Warcraft. Because they get overlooked by the average player and gold maker, check their prices on your own auction house, and the cost of the mats. Don’t forget to check supply and demand before you craft them.

Which of these can you use today to increase your gold making?

Overcharged Capacitor

Nightmare Tear

Invisibility Potion

Swiftness Potion

Certificate of Ownership

Tuxedo Pants

Mechanical Squirrel

Making Gold from Blackrock Depths

BRD will make you rich. Blackrock depths was one of my favourite instances in vanilla original World of Warcraft. My English “Blitz spirit” or +stamina meant that I could go the whole distance through to Emperor Thaurrissan and the old Jailbreak alliance Onyxia attunement run. In WOTLK, BRD was a favourite of engineers who needed Schematic Field Repairbot 74A (found on the floor near the boss in the golem foundry) in order to progress to making Jeeves repair bot. Cataclysm found BRD taking a decline in interest as gold gamers parked characters in front of the AH npcs without moving, concentrating on arbitrage, shuffling and flipping.

Schematic Heaven

As well as the repairbot schematic, other engineering schematics drop from mobs throughout the zone. World Enlarger, Gnomish Alarm-O-bot, Dark Iron Rifle and Goblin Jumper Cables.

The Schematic: Deadly Scope

A resellable pattern. Buy for 30s from Yuka Screw Spigot just inside the entrance, and sell for 20-30g on the Auction House.

Grim Guzzler

Plugger Spazzring

Plugger drops some greens and useful stuff when you kill him, but before you do, please clear out his inventory.

He sells:

  • Dark Iron Ale Mug.  Buy all you can and pick up all the ones on the table. Sell them in a pack of 2 during the darkmoon faire for players who want to collect the Jubling pet.
  • Sulfuron Slammer. Fun/novelty drink that blasts your drinking companions with a mouthful of fire.  Occasionally sells in AH.
  • Pattern Black Dragonscale Breast Plate. Buy for 2g20s, sell for 50g or up to 100g, again this depends on your tenacity and finding a ‘collector’ leatherworker who wants every pattern.

Sulfuron Hammer

Thorium Brotherhood guy in Grim Guzzler BRD will sell you a sulfuron hammer pattern in return for a sulfuron ingot (drops from golemag the destroyer in Molten Core).  The patterns can be sold on AH for between 3-5,000g depending on your tenacity. If your character is a blacksmith, you can sell the actual crafted item for anything up to 50k.

Blackrock Rare

The Behemoth patrols the grinding quarry in front of BRD entrance. He drops Vilerend Slicer which sells for about 30-40g at the moment. Slap him on the way into BRD.

Lost in the Depths?

Blackrock Depths was difficult to navigate, and was especially so for me as someone who still gets lost in the cave-of-dailies in Deepholm.  Blizzard now gives you an instance map.  However, I found that this flowchart map of Blackrock Depths used at wowwiki was much simpler to understand.

BRD

I hope you will take some time to visit BRD today and make some profit.  BRD can also be a relaxing place as a solo level 85, after the hustle and bustle of the AH and Cataclysm zones, so give it a try today.

Thomas Edison: “Opportunity is missed by most people because it is dressed in overalls and looks like work. “

You think you’ve been too busy in Mount Hyjal and Firelands. You are keeping on top of the Auction House and playing the waiting game with Truegold, slowly selling off the inferno rubies, and ignoring your alts pleading for new BoE epics.  You’re gathering ore and herbs as you do the dailies, and multitasking your ass off.  But you’re missing out on something I found today in my auction house.

Price Each, my server tonight:

Heartblossom 3g50

Cinderbloom 75s each

What should any business do when their competitors are busy elsewhere? Profit.

Heartblossom is still needed as an alchemy reagent.  It’s especially in demand right now by alchemists trying to cash in on the inferno ruby market.

This is a classic ‘go where the gold is’ strategy. Find the problem players are having (expensive Heartblossom) and solve it.

If you’re going to bite the bullet and get involved in farming for heartblossom, beware of the wowhead map “pins” at http://www.wowhead.com/object=202750.  They have not removed the non-spawning nodes which were nerfed.

No point reinventing the wheel, here is a nice heartblossom farming map from wow-professions.com  Click for a larger version.

Personally I had best results around the western semi-arc but “your server will vary”.

What else to do in Deepholm

  • Therazane dailies
  • Elementium Ore
  • Rares: Terboras.  Drops gold and Terborus’ Rotating Bands (1,500g or more)
  • Aeonaxx : rare mount (can’t sell, but yay, rare mount!)
