Have Blizzard lifted the Warcraft Gold Cap?

World of Warcraft Gold Cap was a traditional way of measuring gold gaming success in WoW.  First set at 214,748g, then raised in Warcraft Patch 4.01 to 999,999g.

[update: Blizzard GM forgot to take his meds or something?]

According to a Blizzard GM, the Gold Cap has now raised to “unreachable level”.

I decided to move 985k across from my main to my bank char today, to store in my guild bank.  I didn’t feel safe with it jiggling around in my pockets, and was worried I was so very near the cap that I might not be able to loot or pick up mail.  I wanted to chat to Blizzard and make sure that if I tried to mail such a large figure across to the bank alt, then I wouldn’t be flagged as a gold seller.  With nearly 1 years /played time on my main alone, I want to keep my account safe.

During the conversation, the GM told me that there was no longer a gold cap.  With the gold cap removed and undocumented in a hotfix, it should be possible to own more than one million gold on one character.

With 975k in my bank as this is written (I invested in some very cheap ore and herbs) I can’t check if this is right.  Is this an undocumented hotfix for Warcraft Patch 4.2.2?  Or is it a mistake, and will it be a part of Patch 4.3 instead?   Can any of my millionaire readers check for me and report back?  I have 150 stacks of ore still left to prospect tonight *sigh*

ps look out for a guest post by Gimp from Gimp’s Gold tomorrow!

pps UPDATE: it’s not true! Thank you to Faid, Flux, Brent and Sweetiebird, who help sort out the confusion.

What question am I asked about making gold in world of warcraft over and over again?   You probably don’t know that I’m a prolific emailer.  I try and answer as many emails as possible, and they’re never one word ‘yes’ or ‘no’ answers!

Many readers are good solid gold makers and are here for tips, and for ideas, or for confirmation that they’re doing the right thing, and want to ‘hang out’ with others who share the same passion for gold making.  I’m also seeing a lot of readers coming back and asking me “I love your gold blog, but where do I start?

Start with what you’re doing now.  Do you do your dailies?  Then take my daily routine cheat sheet, and make sure you do your dailies every time you log on.

Do you have your professions maxed out?  Spend 15 minutes adding some skill points to your professions.  Professions are a fantastic way to add value to stuff you own, so you can sell it for more than you bought it.  Have a browse through my information on your profession.  Why only 15 minutes?  Because I don’t want you burnt out and bored before you even started!

Gather.  Go out in the wild and pick up herbs, ore, cloth, gold, elemental volatiles.  Farming has a low return of gold-per-hour compared to working the Auction House, but when you combine it with your dailies, or other quests, then your profits are going to be much better.  Plus, you learn where things come from, how plentiful they are, and what sort of competition you have.  These are all important skills to have when you’re trying to ease your way into the gold making market.

If you find something that makes gold, take a mental note.  And try it again.  Gold making isn’t always glamorous, just keep doing the things that work.

When should I sell my Christmas Pets?

Dear Gold Queen,

Hello! I just bought your Teen Gold Guide and Pet Shop Guide and LOVE them.

Especially the Pet Shop one, because recently, on my alt someone invited me to a guild, and then the guild master left since I guess he didn’t want it so I was stuck with it. And I just had a “whatever” attitude. But then, I bought your Pet Shop guide and read about using guild storage for storing pets. So, I checked the guild storage, not only were there already 3 tabs paid for, but I also found 21 Red Helper Boxes, 25 Green Helper Boxes, 12 Jingling Bells, and 10 Snowman Kits!!

If it weren’t for your guide I would have never known of these or even had the knowledge of what they’re worth!

So, a question I have is, when would be the best time to sell these? Would it be the beginning of Winter Veil? Now? Etc.

I actually love the Teen one equally to the Pet Shop being a teen and all, but I had to share my Pet Shop story. 😀 Thanks so much for that teen guide! It’ll really help me since I am in school now.

Thanks for your help!,

Brandon

My reply

Dear Brandon (hello again!) [* I’d emailed him earlier today with a copy of the Daily Cheat Sheet]

Thank you very much for taking the time to email me.

How lucky were you! Finding all those Christmas pets in the free guild bank!

When is the best time to sell them? From personal experience, this will be over the weekend. Put one or two of each on your auction house, at the start of Saturday morning, and keep an eye on them. If they aren’t sold in an hour or two, start barking them on trade chat “WTS [item][item]”. Don’t include the price. If someone wants to buy the item, then they will whisper you and ask you for the price. If you *do* include the price, then the ears of the other gold gamers will prick up and wonder if that item (the Christmas pets) is worth selling, whether there is a profit from buying low, selling high.

Keep going, sell what you can, then STOP on Monday. Let the perceived rarity build up over the working week, and repeat it again on the next Saturday. You will get more gold from selling frivolous vanity items over the weekend.

Just email me if you need any help

Readers, do you agree with my advice to Brandon about when and how to sell the rare pets that he discovered in his personal guild bank?  Do you have some extra advice for him?

The last post at the Gold Queen received a mixed response. Why did I want to offer you a look inside a Gold Beggars head?

Is Gold Begging wrong?

In view of the rules of World of Warcraft, you can beg all you want to. Social Etiquette, though, has evolved over the last few years from simple tolerance of gold beggars to annoyance with their existence. There was a peak of gold beggars, from my personal point of view, during the Burning Crusade. Shattrath was free of Gold Beggars, but port back to a capital city, and your screens were filled with level 1s pestering, pestering, pestering.

Two things that annoy me about Gold Beggars

  1. They spam. I don’t need to explain spam, or why it’s annoying.
  2. They don’t work. We’re working our butts off, and these guys are still hanging around, still pestering. Still asking.

My last Gold Beggar

The last time I encountered a gold beggar, I took him to one side and chatted to him about his options and what he could or couldn’t do to make some gold instead of being a royal pain in the backside.   Like you, I assumed gold beggars were very young or very stupid, or both.

I was wrong.

I was speaking to a member of a good 25m heroic raiding guild, and was surprised to hear that he actually begged for gold. How could that work, I wondered, aren’t gold beggars utter worthless scum? If that was so, then how could this serious raider be involved in such a trade? I needed to know what was in his head.

What was in the gold beggar’s head?

When I found out, I shared his story with you. Maybe you’re curious about who gold beggars really are? Or why they exist?

I think of myself, as you do, as someone who thinks outside the box. Someone who looks at the rules and how they could be bent slightly or used to suit my needs.

I was angry with myself that I had allowed the social taboo of “beggars are scum” to cloud my sight that perhaps begging could work. I discovered that begging could work. I discovered begging was not for me. I shared that insight with you.

What’s your opinion on gold begging, now you’ve seen inside a gold beggar’s mind? Is it still the same? Changed?

Rare Interview with a World of Warcraft Gold Beggar.

I asked “Z” about how he begs for gold in the major alliance city of Stormwind, and how much gold he can make.

Is gold begging something that you do often?

Z: Begging is something I do in my spare time just for fun when I can’t be bothered to sit by the Auction House (AH)  or when im not raiding! I mostly beg at weekends though.

Did you become a gold beggar by accident or by choice?

Z: Well the story behind it was that I was always getting pestered by people asking for gold, and basically I felt bad saying no. It wouldn’t take me long to regain gold I gave away so I always said yes! As long as they were nice =P Then it clicked “why don’t I do what they are and make some nice easy profit!”

Would you recommend gold begging to other gold gamers?

Z: What I will say is that begging won’tÂnecessarily give the biggest gold per hour (gph) returns ( or could it ??? ) however, it is useful at the start of your gold empire to get a few gold as a low level char to start giving you gold to spend on ah items to resell.

Can we get into specifics: What level is your beggar, and what does he wear?

Z: My *current* begging character is a cute lil’ pink bearded lvl 10 gnome.  However I don’t stick to only 1 toon, I mix it up between 3 or 4 and make new toons with different names, no one wants to be pestered every weekend knowingly by the same guy.

I actually have many different outfits for my begging toons ranging from being dressed up as a pirate to being a wizard.  Again I mix it up a bit to keep it fun and interesting.

What does he say to the other WoW players?

Z: This is the make or break on if you are going to make any gold, Usually I only whisper players so I what I do is start with something like: “Hi I’m sorry to bother you, but could I please borrow some gold for [ links item ] it would be very much appreciated kind sir / madam!”  If they gave me gold I then proceed on telling them how kind and amazing they are for doing so. People like being told they are awesome this usually results in getting even more gold. Sometimes I’ll offer to dance for them however I’m afraid the *dances* need to be kept clean for legal reasons ! Sorry =(

What sort of gold can you get from begging?

Z: It depends totally on your server and the people you ask. We all know that there are a lotta douches in World of Warcraft, however what people tend to forget is there are more nice people than bad ones. In an hour or so I can make anywhere between 20g to over 2k if you ask the right people.

Are there other benefits from begging, such as making contacts?

Z: Of course there are loads of benefits.  Yes, you do make a lot of new contacts and friends.  You also also get a lot of “go quest lolroflcopter n0ob” comments and worse =P However, sometimes you have to think outside the box.  The biggest enjoyment I get from it is people’s different reactions. For example: laughing at some of the replies I get and posting them in guild chat.

Have you got any tips for World of Warcraft players?

Z: Yeah, there are a couple of things that will greatly improve your chances of netting some gold from people. Firstly, its very worthwhile doing your research on who has gold on your server this will hugely increase your chances of free gold, those guys with some luck will be your “big earners”. You can do this by checking out your Auction House. You’ll see the same names cropping up all the time.

Also, be polite. Be nice to the people you’re asking. “hey give me goldz plox”  just aint gonna cut it, you wont get anywhere. If your nice and actually say why you would like/want the gold, then the person you are asking psychologically will be more likely to help you out.  Especially if you’re nice and show them why you want/need some gold; regardless if you even want what you are linking!

Yes, yes, it’s lying, I know, but its sneaky and sneaky gets gold!

There we have it, in case you always wondered why someone is gold begging!

Can you magically create gold?

What if this really did work in World of Warcraft?
