Here is what happens when Warcraft players decide to help a single mom afford her game subscription.

I’m still trying to pick my jaw up off the floor.

Here’s the full story from the beginning

A very few of you know that I was feeling under the weather the last few days.  Blue. Mopey. Since a certain event, I can get sudden forceful memories of traumatic events. which leave me hiding from the world for days at a time.  But if there’s one thing that will grab my attention, it’s someone who needs help, and helping someone make gold in World of Warcraft.

I met a friend a few years back on a facebook page where moms of kids with autism support each other. We help each other out.  Yesterday I saw the message from her:

khaos

In order to pay for IRL expenses, she had to stop her Warcraft Subscription.

WTF!? NO!

Yet if she could make gold, she could buy a wow token and pay for her Warcraft sub with gold. And I know how to make gold. 2+2=

I climbed out of my deep dark hole of moping, and offered to roll on her US server, make some gold, and get her a wowtoken.

I had 48 hours to make 23k.

I was determined.

I would make her a wowtoken and I’d show her how to make gold at the same time, so she could do it herself.

I could even try and livestream it at twitch.tv/thegoldqueen so others could see how to make 23,000g on a level 1 toon.

Screenshot_26

I needed help. So then I turned to Twitter.

Hey, I said, I’m going to make a brand new US account, why don’t you join me?

twitter

The response was overwhelming.

Hundreds of messages of support on twitter.

60+ people came to watch on the livestream.

People rolled brand new level 1s on the server

We leveled together.

We mined, we picked herbs, we quested.

We went around and picked up items to sell.

We auctioned together.

People cheered us on with twitter and twitch chat.

My account was stuck in Starter Edition (it has since, finally, upgraded to Full Account, due to slow payment processing, ty paypal lol)

Donations

People started to donate gold.

I couldn’t trade at all, so Friends Ortinoth and Verbranden acted as “purses” holding the gold and giving it to the lady, letting her buy wowtokens from the AH.

We weren’t expecting donations at all, I had planned to have to make the 23k/wowtoken alone or with a bunch of people on the livestream.

It was AWESOME

[Click for the full size, un-retouched images]

The Full Video (it’s still uploading to YouTube, sorry!)

6 Hours later, and with some magic from donations, gold makers, our brand new accounts/characters on the US-Lightbringer (alliance side) had made over 420,000g for wowtokens for our Mum-in-need.

She was at turns AFK (dealing with irl, kids, house!) and overwhelmed with speechlessness at our efforts.

Screenshot_24

[box type=”info”] Yesterday’s Twitch.tv Livestream was awesome for several reasons. That 1) we raised a lot of wowtokens for the lady in need, but 2) that we all pulled together to do it. I’m proud of the twitter warcraft community, I’m proud of the twitch wow community. Thank you to everyone who donated, whether that is gold, $$, items for sale, or just your time and support for the effort. Saturday & Sunday I will log in again to check how sales have gone, and to send MORE gold across. We raised 420,000g for wow tokens on US-Lightbringer for a single mom of a boy with autism. Warcraft is a major source of de-stressing for her. You helped her so much. ty[/box]

We raised over 420,000g in one evening on the US Servers!

420k

What’s been selling?

Today’s post, something a little different.

[warning: graphics intensive blog post coming up]

You all know about my Long Tail Alt, and how I use it to sell:

  • Greenies
  • Transmogs
  • Things that take ages to sell
  • Bits and Pieces I don’t want to deal with daily
  • Patterns
  • Limited supply items
  • Recipes/Patterns
  • Farmed items
  • Flipped items
  • Old Crafted Items (Enchants/pots mostly)

Today’s post is a Look Over My Shoulder and see what I’ve been selling this week.

I hope it will give you

  • Inspiration
  • Hope
  • Interesting ideas to try

I have found many gold makers or farmers willing to show you how to acquire items, but very few willing to show you how to sell them, and even less showing them actually sold.

Prices

[button type=”icon” icon=”warning”] Your Server Will Vary. Prices here are only valid on my own server, at the exact time that these items were posted. DO NOT replicate these prices. Use this list for ideas and inspiration for what you might want to sell. [/button]

I hear responses “wow I wish I was on your server, I can’t sell for that much on my own server.” These prices were accomplished by using

  • Patience
  • Good timing (transmogs at the weekend, consumables on raid nights, low level items for weekends)
  • Correct prices.  Not undercutting just for the hell of it, not overcutting randomly. Knowing how much this item will sell for.  Often more than you think!

You will notice transmog items (click here for my full TSM Transmog group, the full list of items to buy, also available on Auctionator addon).  You will notice Giant Bones from the Isle of Giants farm, and you will notice a heck of a lot of crappy looking greenies.

Why do these greenies sell?

Because other sellers have decided greenies aren’t worth it, that levelers either buy a new level 90, or use heirlooms, and so they have abandoned the market.

Sometimes, in order to win, you just have to be the person who lasts the longest, and tries the hardest.  That’s why my greenies sell.

Farmer’s Broom Quick Flip Tip

The Farmer’s Broom is the name of two items.

Both of these are high value on the Auction House.

Grab a few Farmer’s Brooms and sell them on the AH for good gold.

Farmer’s Broom #1

You need

  • Level 6+
  • Get to Tirisfal
  • Any faction

Drops from Tirisfal Farmhand, a hostile-to-all level 5 human just north of the Forsaken (Undead) starting zone.

Tirisfal Farmhand

Tirisfal Farmhand

Farmer’s Broom #2

You need

  • Level 90+
  • Warlords of Draenor
  • Alliance

Merchant Derrook

Sells Farmers Broom for 22c.

He also sells

  • Farmer’s Shovel (looks like the generic spade) 22c
  • Farmer’s Hoe (looks like the same hoe you used on Tiller’s Farm in Pandaria) 22c

If you want one for yourself, they are all staves, so if you can use a staff, you can equip all of these items, but don’t expect it to do much damage!

You can find Merchant Derrook, a male draenei NPC, just south of Elodar centre, “working” in the fields. Click to enlarge images.

How to sell Farmer’s Broom on the WoW Auction House

Selling is the most important part of this flip.

Any fool can farm, or buy from a vendor!

[button type=”icon” icon=”warning”] Warning: Do not post more than one on the Auction House at any time.  This will destroy the perceived rarity of this item.[/button]

Selling tips:

  • Don’t always have Farmer’s Broom for sale.  This increases its increased perceived rarity – how rare the buyer thinks the item is, and how much it’s worth.  This tip goes for all expensive things.
  • Don’t get cocky. Farmer’s Broom is not worth 10,000g.
  • Don’t give up, it’s current global value today is 110g.  Just because you bought it for 22c, remember to include in the price your travel time and your research time.  Don’t post it under 100g.
  • Use this in conjunction with all the other flips, and gold making methods.

Good Luck.

[button type=”icon” icon=”question”] What is flipping? Flipping means to buy low, sell high. You purchase one item or many, either in the Auction House or through trading direct to another player. Then you ‘flip’ that item around by putting it back where you bought it, but for a higher price, and earning gold from this work.[/button]

Warcraft Gold Podcasts

Just a brief note today, folks, to tell you about Jim from Power Word:Gold and his latest podcast. I was an accidental guest. I bumped into him on Twitch livestreaming and I was so excited to see him I just jumped in and blabber mouthed my way through his garrison struggles.  It was all a bit silly.

You can listen here

Your WoW Money podcast has also kindly mentioned my blog a few times recently, and you can listen to their recent broadcasts here.  (Although let me add that all the techniques of gold making they critiqued can and do make gold, they’re not meant to give you the gold cap as a single technique! LOL)

Come and talk to me on Twitter, and don’t forget to subscribe to the blog-by-email newsletter and subscribe on twitch.tv

Your Bank Alt

Where should you park your bank alt, your character that use to pick up items from the mailbox and post onto the AH?

Traditionally, your bank alt would live at the mailbox in the city with the Auction House. Stormwind or Orgrimmar.  Now you have a massive choice.

Ashran (Stormshield, Warspear)

Pros: Easy to travel to/from Draenor. Portals to other cities.

Cons: Busy, could get laggy. No portal to Pandaria/Shattrath/Dalaran.

Screenshot_57

Pandaria (Shrine of Two Moons, Shrine of Seven Stars)

Pros: Engineering alts can access AH here, plus banks, transmog, portals to other cities. Access to the popular Guo Lai Halls / Vale farming spot.

Cons: Need engineering to access the AH

pandabank

Everlook, Booty Bay, Gadgetzan

Pros: Not many people now realise that these previously-neutral auction houses are now available to any character across the whole realm, as part of the joined-AH. So your posts here will appear in your local capital city also.  You can really hide nicely in these places.  Also each town has a really good supply of limited supply items that sell nicely on the AH.

Cons: These cities can be lonely, not much action, you won’t be able to trade with many players face to face. No access to the trade channel.

Dalaran

Pros: Three different AHs, here, plus access to professions traders (including ink), frozen orb trader, banks. Easy access to ICC, stormpeaks for ulduar and time lost farming. Dalaran was the new Exodar.

Cons: Citizens of Dalaran! Raise your eyes to the sky and zzzzz

dalatrade

Shattrath

Pros: Access to Sunwell Isle Quel’Danas, near to Outland limited supply route, near old fishing daily

Cons: The Aldor Lift.

Screenshot_56

Exodar, Silvermoon

Pros: Deserted, so much less lag.

Cons: No Flying! Getting lost constantly. Difficult to leave, except for the Silvermoon> Undercity portal.

Alliance Auction Houses

Stormwind – access to Cataclysm zones, traders, vendors

Ironforge – old times sake. Nice limited supply items

Darnassus – very quiet. Nice limited supply items. Can fly at the AH

Screenshot_59

Horde Auction Houses

Undercity – old times sake – close to eastern kingdoms access to SM for farming

Thunder Bluff – many cows. what could be better!?

Orgimmar – access to portals for cata zones. Trade channel. Busy city.

Items to move to AH cities

(Mages, you can just go away now, I’m not even talking to you anymore.)

Boots of the Bay – takes you to Booty Bay

Jaina’s Locket – Dalaran

Wrap of Unity – takes you to Stormwind / Orgrimmar

Which city is your favourite?  Which is the best for your alt? Why?
